The kappa in the title El kappa, el unicornia y la cosecha de los perritos tiernos (The Kappa, the Unicorn and the Harvest of the Sweet Little Dogs) is a creature of Japanese folklore, which Encyclopaedia Britannica's editors describe as "a type of vampirelike lecherous creature that is more intelligent than the devilish" oni (demons) "and less malevolent toward men."

In the first-person statement on the website of SGR Galería, a gallery in Bogotá that shows him, he writes that, looking for the everyday story of the muleteer as an alternative to the story of La Violencia (The Violence), the name for Colombia's political violence, "aparecen las imágenes fantásticas y los cuentos de encuentros con el diablo, seres maravillosos y brujas, que operan como relatos vivos que me permiten estar más cerca a las mujeres de mi familia" (fantastical images appear, and tales of encounters with the devil, marvelous beings and witches, which work as living stories that let me be closer to the women of my family). Some of those women, he adds, practice witchcraft, "para engatusar y para curar" (to beguile and to heal).
