Allosaurus leg

Morrison Formation, Wyoming

150 million years ago

Fossil · 84 × 24 × 18 in

This Allosaurus leg was collected in the spring of 2016 in Big Horn County, Wyoming, in the Morrison Formation, then prepared out of hard sandstone and mounted on a custom steel stand. The limb is about six feet tall, seven on its stand.

Nearly all of the bones are real: the only casts are the astragalus, a small ankle bone, and one bone of the smallest toe. The top of the tibia has been restored, with the usual crack fills and some surface restoration where the bone had eroded. Several nearly complete Allosaurus were collected from the same quarry, two of which are now or will soon be in major museums; this leg comes from an individual that was not complete enough to build a full skeleton from.
