El rezo del peyote

El rezo del peyote

Santos Motoapohua de la Torre (1942–)

Beads, beeswax and plywood · 15 × 15 cm

The back is inscribed and signed: "El rezo del peyote hecho por Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago y familia" (The peyote prayer, made by Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago and family).

The piece shows a peyote, with a candle beside it. Santos de la Torre has called peyote "el tercer ojo... pero es de Dios" (the third eye... but it is God's). The Wirikuta Preservation Project calls it the "medicina sagrada del pueblo wixárika" (sacred medicine of the Wixárika people), a cactus that "les permite comunicarse con sus deidades" (lets them communicate with their deities).

In its guide to the Wixárika Route, Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia writes that candles "representan la luz del Sol y la conexión con las deidades" (represent the light of the Sun and the connection with the deities) and are lit as offerings at the sacred sites.
