El venado invisible para salvar su vida

El venado invisible para salvar su vida

Santos Motoapohua de la Torre (1942–)

Beads, beeswax and plywood · 15 × 15 cm

The back is inscribed and signed: "El venado invisible para salbar su vida hecho por Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago y familia" (The deer that turns invisible to save its life, made by Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago and family).

A deer stands among candles and stars. In the account the yarn painter José Benítez Sánchez gave Juan Negrín, who with Yvonne Negrín founded the Centro de Investigación Wixárika, Tamatsí Kauyumarie is “Nuestro Hermano Mayor Venadito del Sol” (Our Elder Brother, Little Deer of the Sun), and “Su cuerpo está lleno de palabras de todas clases, de cantos y rezos” (his body is full of words of every kind, of chants and prayers); “Él recibió todas las palabras de los Antepasados” (he received all the words of the Ancestors).

In the Ruta Wixárika guide of Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), candles are "Elemento ritual básico. Representan la luz del Sol y la conexión con las deidades" (a basic ritual element. They represent the light of the Sun and the connection with the deities), and they are lit as offerings at the sacred sites.
