La abundancia de hikuri peyote con su energía

La abundancia de hikuri peyote con su energía

Santos Motoapohua de la Torre (1942–)

Beads, beeswax and plywood · 15 × 15 cm

The back is inscribed and signed: "La abundancia de hikuri peyote con su energia hecho por Santos M. de la Torre y familia" (The abundance of hikuri, the peyote, with its energy, made by Santos M. de la Torre and family).

Four peyotes fill the piece. Santos de la Torre has said of peyote: "Cuando lo comes con miedo, asusta; pero cuando lo haces con amor, quieres más porque te da poder, energía... surge el entendimiento" (When you eat it with fear, it frightens; but when you do it with love, you want more, because it gives you power, energy... understanding comes). Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, in its guide to the Wixárika Route, writes that the cactus "sólo crece de forma silvestre en Wirikuta" (grows wild only in Wirikuta), where, the Wirikuta Preservation Project adds, the Wixárika people have gone on pilgrimage for centuries "para recolectar su medicina sagrada" (to gather their sacred medicine).

Juan Negrín, founding director of the Wixárika Research Center, explains the painter Yauxali's 1980 yarn painting Our Elder Brother Hot Arrows from a taped conversation with the artist: in it, "the round peyote forms become nierikate, mirrors of metaphysical perception."
