La flor de la nube
Santos Motoapohua de la Torre (1942–)
Beads, beeswax and plywood · 15 × 15 cm
The back is inscribed and signed: "La flor de la nube hecho por Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago y familia" (The flower of the cloud, made by Santos M. de la Torre de Santiago and family).
The piece shows a flower. The Wixárika Facebook page Orgullo Wixarika writes that tuutú is the Wixárika word for flower, and that "una flor es mucho más que una planta hermosa: es ofrenda, mensaje, presencia espiritual" (a flower is much more than a beautiful plant: it is an offering, a message, a spiritual presence).
Zigzags are beaded along the four sides of the piece. In José Benítez Sánchez's 1980 yarn painting Tatéi Nɨ'ariwame Releases the Rain Serpents, explained by Juan Negrín, founding director of the Wixárika Research Center, from a recorded conversation with the artist, "the zigzag figure at the bottom left hand corner symbolizes the lightning" of Xiráunime, the child of Tatéi Nɨ'ariwame, Our Mother Messenger of Rains: "as the rains spring from her head, lightning will be discharged from her chest" as Xiráunime.
