Andrés Anza (b. 1991) is a Mexican ceramic sculptor, born in Monterrey, who received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Monterrey in 2014. As a student he began assisting his uncle, the ceramic sculptor Mauricio Cortés, and learned to work in clay in his workshop. His first solo exhibition was at the Centro Cultural Plaza Fátima in San Pedro Garza García in 2015.
He builds amorphous forms by hand and covers them in thousands of handmade clay spikes, often painted with acrylics. The spikes, he has said, evoke the piñas of Michoacán, and his saturated color the Trees of Life of Metepec. In his words, "Applying thousands of spikes to my sculptures is as natural as applying thousands of brushstrokes to a canvas."
In May 2024 he won the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize and its grant of 50,000 euros for I only know what I have seen (2023), a life-size ceramic sculpture in five parts, shown with the work of the 29 other finalists at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The same year, at the exhibition (Un) Known Territories at Officine Saffi in Milan, he won a residency at Guldagergaard in Denmark, which he took up in 2025. In 2025 he and the designer Daniela Estrada founded MORA, an artist residency in Monterrey.
Ten years after his first show, he returned to Plaza Fátima in 2025 with Fragmentos de un tiempo infinito, 40 pieces curated by Alberto Ríos de la Rosa. At Salón ACME 2025 in Mexico City, Agencia de Arte presented work from Paisaje a la memoria, a group of thirteen ceramic sculptures. In 2026 Galleria Anna Marra showed his work at Zona Maco in February, and that summer his sculptures were in Claytopia 2026 at Guldagergaard in Skælskør, Denmark. In September his sculpture Traditional Overflow was at Homo Faber 2026 in Venice. On September 23, 2026, Galleria Anna Marra in Rome opened Paisaje a la montaña, his second solo exhibition there: new sculptures made in dialogue with the Cerro de la Silla, the mountain over Monterrey, and, the gallery notes, his first use of glaze.
