Mariana Paniagua Cortés is a painter, born in Mexico City in 1994. She studied visual arts at the Faculty of Arts and Design of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She received the FONCA Young Creators grant three times, in 2016, 2018 and 2021. She lives and works in Mexico City.
Most of the 2024 and 2025 paintings listed on Artsy and in PEANA's checklist are acrylic, oil and encaustic on canvas; the 2022 works listed by interior 2.1 are oil, acrylic and wax on linen. PEANA, which has shown her work in Mexico City, writes that she takes up landscape "as a multiplicity of forces" and that her work rests "above all, on error in the pictorial process." The gallery interior 2.1 likewise describes a practice based on trial and error. A 2025 exhibition text by the gallery Ambar Quijano connects her paintings to the idea of a "metabolized landscape" and to a process of material sedimentation.
Her solo exhibitions include shows at Galería Tu Mamá (2018), Casa Equis (2019), interior 2.1 (2021), Nixxxon (2022) and ISLERA (2023), and in 2024 at NSFW and at the Galería de Arte Mexicano, where she showed Miro el sol y no lo reconozco. In 2022 interior 2.1 presented her work at Material Art Fair alongside that of Javier Barrios, describing her approach to nature through "the immensity of natural disasters or the starry night." From September to December 2025 she was one of six women artists in Painting as Medium: The Alchemy of Image & Matter at Ambar Quijano. From October 23 to December 20, 2025, PEANA presented El rumor de las cosas, a two-person exhibition with Natalia Ramos. Galería de Arte Mexicano lists her among its artists and included her in Vasos comunicantes, a group exhibition curated by Enrique Giner de los Rios in homage to the gallery's ninety years.
