Omar Barba Ocampo was born in Mexico City on September 17, 1971, according to Galería Vórtice, the gallery in Mexico City's Roma Norte that lists him among its artists. The gallery notes that 1791971, the date written as digits, is a palindrome. The gallery says he studied architecture at UNAM from 1991 to 1996 and has been a self-taught artist since 1991, dedicated exclusively to artistic creation since 2000.
In a 2013 text the gallery reproduces, Jesús Muñoz described one of his works as “una oleada de color y formas” (a wave of color and shapes) at first sight that, on observation, “se llena de detalles inquietantes” (fills with unsettling details). “Ver no es suficiente,” he wrote (seeing is not enough). Galería Mosaico reproduces the same passage on its page for him, without naming its author.
In a 2026 Milenio column, Humberto Ríos Navarrete reported, drawing on the artist Gabriela Jasso, that Vórtice started in 2017 as a project driven by the artists Theo Camacho, Omar Barba Ocampo and Mario Varguez, who found in the Roma neighborhood a place to work and exhibit together. Camacho told the columnist that they had first meant the space as their studios and opened it to the public because of how the neighborhood had developed.
He posted the announcement of Esto es Vórtice CDMX, the collective's summer group show of its resident artists, which opened on August 1, 2026, and tagged himself among them. Galería Vórtice's own announcement of México Mágico, a group show held through September 2026, also names him.
