Oscar Velasco

Oscar Velasco is a painter from Mexico City, born in 1986. Galería Vórtice, an artist-run space in the city's Roma neighborhood, lists him among its artists. Terzo Gallery in Hermosillo, Sonora, which also offers his work, gives his full name as Óscar Hernández Velasco and his birth as June 1986.

Vórtice's page says that his great-grandfather was a wood carver, his grandfather a draftsman and his mother an amateur painter. He drew from childhood and explored caricature, illustration, urban murals and tattooing until 2008, the year he took up painting. Vórtice's page says he studied for four years with Juan José Camacho and Theo Camacho.

In 2012 he exhibited and placed his first works in Hermosillo, Sonora, at Lucita Aguilera's gallery. Galería Vórtice describes his painting as built from traditional elements based on popular stories, in still lifes, portraits and abstraction leaning toward surrealism. Terzo Gallery describes dense landscapes centered on Mexican fauna, with fantastical elements and textures made with earths and sands. Vórtice's page closes with a statement of his, in Spanish and English: "I believe that art is implicit from the very genesis of the human species, it is something instinctive and as such, it must be perceived in a natural, simple, but always stimulating way to the senses."

In 2025 a skull print of his, inspired by the Día de Muertos tradition, was part of Tzompantli, an exhibition at Galería Vórtice. He wrote on Instagram that it gathers the recurring elements of his work: ants, owls, frogs, dragonflies and moons. He was among the resident artists tagged in the announcement of Esto es Vórtice CDMX, the collective's summer group show, which opened on August 1, 2026. Galería Vórtice's announcement of México Mágico, a group show held through September 2026, names him as well.
