Theo Camacho (1981–) and Juan José Camacho (1950–)

2023

200 × 280 cm

The canvas brings together the carnival figures of Theo Camacho and the jungle animals of his father, Juan José Camacho; the two painters run Galería de Arte Camacho in Tepoztlán, Morelos.

Galería Vórtice, the Mexico City gallery that shows them both, writes that Theo, inspired by opera and its characters, took up the carnival as his theme: his work "nos transporta a un carnaval donde conviven músicos, acróbatas, personajes voluminosos y estilizados, aves enjauladas y máscaras que ocultan realidades" (takes us to a carnival where musicians, acrobats, voluminous and stylized characters, caged birds and masks that hide realities live side by side).

Juan José Camacho, Crear Valor wrote in 2024, "crea mundos surrealistas llenos de color en donde los animales cobran vida y en las selvas se envuelven en sus hojas" (creates surreal worlds full of color where animals come to life and are wrapped in the leaves of the jungles).

In a statement that BADA México, an art fair, published when it presented Juan José Camacho among its artists for 2025, he wrote that in his jungles “todos esos seres” (all those beings) are watching us “con curiosidad y asombro” (with curiosity and wonder), and that the moon is a constant in the work, “aunque no se muestre” (even when it is not shown).
