Alex Dorfsman (b. 1977, Mexico City) is a Mexican photographer and visual artist who trained in fine arts at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda.” He has worked mainly in photography and video, and landscape recurs throughout his work.
In 2011 he and Gonzalo Lebrija won a new Latin American photography acquisition prize of the Colección de Fotografía Purificación García, awarded at the Zona Maco fair, and the collection bought three photographs from his series Superficie. In 2012 he was among the artists that the Puebla talavera maker Uriarte Talavera, with the Universidad de las Américas Puebla, invited to work with its artisans for El cinco de mayo de 1862: Uriarte Talavera contemporánea, curated by Sylvia Navarrete at the Museo Franz Mayer. According to La Jornada, he brought Uriarte a small old television monitor, from which a mold and replicas were made, and on their screens he drew scenes and landscapes of Puebla. In 2014 Galería Patricia Conde showed 3 pausas rumbo a Nikko, photographs he made in 2013 in Nikko National Park in Tochigi, Japan.
The MUAC at UNAM holds Sin título, from his series Plásticos (2009), and the Fundación Televisa collection holds a work from This mountain collapsed and became a bridge (2010). In 2024 he self-published Litósfera, an artist’s book announced in an edition of 200, each copy with a different original photograph; a launch with the curator Paola Santoscoy and the artist Mauricio Alejo was announced for June 15. In April 2025 the EXIT imprint published Nostalgia adquirida, photographs he made, by his account over about a month and a half, at a secondhand bookshop in Mexico City’s Colonia Roma that no longer exists; in his words, “la librería se transforma en libro, un libro de libros” (the bookshop becomes a book, a book of books). He also teaches; in June and July 2026 he taught a workshop at Arte Abierto, scheduled as five sessions, on the archive as part of the creative process.
